Trigger Point Dry Needling
Trigger Point Dry Needling is a highly effective technique for treating muscle pain and tension.
Myofascial trigger points (commonly described as “knots”) make muscles tight, hard and painful. Sometimes the pain is specific to one area and readily identifiable. But trigger points can also cause frustratingly vague symptoms such as muscles or limbs that feel “wooden” or “heavy”, that ache all over, that feel weak when you try to use them, that twitch or cramp at night.
In Dry Needling, trigger points are identified by palpation and the needle is gently inserted in order to target this point. This elicits a “twitch response”, which is followed by a sense of relaxation and relief. Dry Needling is particularly effective for targeting trigger points in deeper or larger muscles that can prove evasive or resistant to therapy, such as the calves or across the shoulders.
Trigger Point Dry Needling is different from acupuncture. With acupuncture the focus is on restoring the balance and flow of energy in the body. The needles are inserted and left in for varying lengths of time. With dry needling, only one needle is used at a time. It is inserted, then removed after a few moments, and the procedure is repeated as different trigger points are targeted. The treatment can be stopped at any time or there can be a break and other neuromuscular techniques used. The client’s comfort is paramount.
Dry Needling can be applied as a separate treatment or integrated into an
NMT treatment if required.
